Awake In Philly is a mutual-help support group for
people coping with a variety of sleep-related disorders, although the
primary focus is on apnea. Providing a forum for education and support for
patients, family members, and others interested interested in the sleep-disorder
community is the main goal.
Sleep apnea is a little discussed disorder, but very
real and very dangerous. Apnea is a chronic condition that affects one
of every five people, and can cause serious problems to someone undiagnosed,
including heart damage, lung damage, an increased risk for accidents,
memory loss, excessive daytime sleepiness (including fall asleep without
warning in the workplace, while driving, or even at home), high blood
pressure, sexual dysfunction, among others.
Through the mutual support of patients and family
members, as well as current information from medical professionals,
we strive to help the apnea patient improve their quality of life.
Awake In Philly meets monthly, and provides a forum
for open discussion about the latest treatments, research, and equipment,
as well as discussing the "other" issues that impacts patients and others,
such as:
How do I properly fit a mask?
How can I help my spouse deal with his or her sleep disorder?
How do I deal with a sleepy bed partner?
What do I tell my boss?
Can I be fired?
What is the ADA? How does the ADA help?
What do I need to know when preparing for travel?
Is it safe to travel with oxygen?
When should I have a new sleep study performed?
