Virtual Support
Support Groups On the 'Net
Newsgroups are part of Usenet, one of the original components
of what evolved into today's Internet. Usenet
is still around today, but seems to be hidden from some people, as
they don't know it exists.
The easiest way to get the complete listing of Usenet newsgroups
is by using a service, such as Google
Groups to find groups you are interested in, and read and post
your comments through that service. In order to send messages to the
various groups using the Google Groups web interface, you must sign
up for a free Google account. The process is fairly simple and only
takes a matter of minutes.
There is one important detail to understand when “chatting”
on the Internet, whether in email, in a Usenet newsgroup, or in any
of the newer message boards that have cropped up over the years. Just
what is this important detail? Well, you can't see the other person's
facial expression or the tone of their voice while reading a message.
To overcome that obstacle, there are things called “emoticons”
that help you understand when someone is joking around, angry, and
so one. The first mention of emoticons goes back a long time, all
the way to the dark ages (circa November 1982). Read here
for more details about the first suggested use of emoticons. A more
up-to-date list, which has evolved over the past two decades, can
be found at this
site.
I've found a few sleep disorder newsgroups, but then again,
I was looking only for specific things. I've listed a couple to get
you started To have another newsgroup included, please email the newsgroup
name, as well as general information about the newsgroup, such as
if it is moderated or un-moderated, if the newsgroup has a website,
if an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for the newsgroup exists, and
the URL. Use the button below to email all the information.
